I love refreshing the house for fall.

Every year I bring in browns and warmer neutrals, and they stay up from September through November. I don’t go crazy on Halloween decor. For me, fall decorating is more about simple swaps that make the house feel warmer and cozier.

Living in Texas, our fall doesn’t get as cool as it does in other places. It’s usually still warm out. But pumpkins on the porch and a few warmer tones inside make it feel like fall anyway.

Our Simple Fall Front Porch

Our front porch is always my favorite thing to decorate for fall. The rest of the year, it’s a black front door, a doormat and a lot of brick and stone. Here’s the before and after.

Front porch before and after fall decor: a plain black front door, then pumpkins, mums, a neutral wreath and a lantern

I keep it simple: a neutral wreath with dried stems and white pumpkins, a planter of mums, a layered doormat, a lantern with a candle, and a mix of orange, white and sage green pumpkins on the steps. The warmer colors stand out against the gray brick and black door without the porch feeling busy.

Pro Tip: Get Your Pumpkins at Costco

Go to Costco for your pumpkins. And go now.

They have the best selection, and they’re cheaper than our local pumpkin patch. We still visit the pumpkin patch with the kids, because that part is about the experience. But for decorating the porch, Costco is where I buy.

The best pumpkins go early, so don’t wait until mid-October.

Simple Fall Swaps Inside

Inside, I don’t redecorate for fall. I make small swaps.

The biggest one is trading the green stems in my vases for brown faux stems. It’s the easiest way to bring fall into a room without adding more stuff. Same vases, same spots, just warmer tones.

Then I swap in warmer pillow covers and a fall throw, add a few pumpkins and a fall candle, and the house feels ready for the season.

Fall Decor FAQ

When should you decorate for fall?

I put our fall decor out in September and keep it up through November.

Where is the best place to buy pumpkins for your porch?

Costco. They have the best selection we’ve found, and they’re cheaper than our local pumpkin patch. Go early, before the best ones are gone.

How do you decorate for fall without Halloween decor?

Stick to warm neutrals and simple swaps: pumpkins and mums on the porch, a neutral wreath, and brown faux stems in place of your usual greenery inside.

I’m KC

Hi, I’m Kayla — welcome to KC Compton Living.

I’ve always loved seeing the potential in a space and figuring out how to make it feel more like home. Over the years, my husband and I have renovated homes, worked on flips, upgraded our new construction homes, and tackled countless DIY projects along the way.

Our current home started as a new construction house, and since moving in, we’ve been slowly making it our own—adding character, color and personality one project at a time. From board and batten and room makeovers to kids’ spaces, outdoor projects and those little builder-grade upgrades that can completely change a room, there’s almost always something we’re working on.

KC Compton Living is where I share the entire process.

You’ll find approachable DIY projects, room makeovers, new construction upgrades, renovations, house flips, decorating ideas and affordable ways to make a home feel more custom. I share the before-and-afters, what we used, what things cost, what worked—and what I’d probably do differently next time.

And because our home is where we’re raising our family, you’ll find some of real life here too: kids’ spaces, seasonal decorating, holidays, birthday ideas, family favorites and the everyday things happening between projects.

I’m not trying to create a picture-perfect house. I want our home to feel warm, beautiful, functional and lived in—a place that works for our family while still feeling like us.

Whether you’re renovating an older home, tackling your first DIY, working on a flip, or staring at a brand-new builder-white room wondering “How do I make this feel less builder-grade?”—you’re in the right place.

We’re building a home and life we love, one project at a time.
