DIY Board and Batten Wall

Our first project in the new house: a square board and batten wall that broke up a giant blank wall and holds up to kids and two dogs. Eight real-life days, one tool we wish we’d bought first.

Making a new construction house feel custom

New construction gives you a floor plan that works and a lot of blank walls. We’re slowly adding character through paint, trim, wall treatments, lighting and projects we tackle ourselves, without tearing a brand-new house apart.

Hi, I’m Kayla

I was the kid who constantly rearranged her bedroom and made vision boards out of magazine pages. That turned into a full condo remodel, two new construction homes, and renovations and flips along the way. These days my style is modern European meets busy mom: beautiful, but able to survive kids, dogs and real life.

I’m KC

Hi, I’m Kayla — welcome to KC Compton Living.

I’ve always loved seeing the potential in a space and figuring out how to make it feel more like home. Over the years, my husband and I have renovated homes, worked on flips, upgraded our new construction homes, and tackled countless DIY projects along the way.

Our current home started as a new construction house, and since moving in, we’ve been slowly making it our own—adding character, color and personality one project at a time. From board and batten and room makeovers to kids’ spaces, outdoor projects and those little builder-grade upgrades that can completely change a room, there’s almost always something we’re working on.

KC Compton Living is where I share the entire process.

You’ll find approachable DIY projects, room makeovers, new construction upgrades, renovations, house flips, decorating ideas and affordable ways to make a home feel more custom. I share the before-and-afters, what we used, what things cost, what worked—and what I’d probably do differently next time.

And because our home is where we’re raising our family, you’ll find some of real life here too: kids’ spaces, seasonal decorating, holidays, birthday ideas, family favorites and the everyday things happening between projects.

I’m not trying to create a picture-perfect house. I want our home to feel warm, beautiful, functional and lived in—a place that works for our family while still feeling like us.

Whether you’re renovating an older home, tackling your first DIY, working on a flip, or staring at a brand-new builder-white room wondering “How do I make this feel less builder-grade?”—you’re in the right place.

We’re building a home and life we love, one project at a time.
